Anyone Confirmed Innocent Will Return to Their Family Safe and Sound

As the trial of those accused of attempting to overthrow Bola Ahmed Tinubu's government continues, Nigeria's Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, stated that individuals arrested over alleged involvement in the coup plot will be released if investigations clear them of wrongdoing.

Musa disclosed this during an interview with Channels Television, stating that security agencies are conducting thorough investigations to ensure that innocent individuals who were not involved are not punished.

He added that only those confirmed to be key players in the plot will be prosecuted in court to face appropriate sentencing.

The minister also confirmed that the alleged coup plot was real, stating that the suspects fully intended to execute it. He noted that the Department of State Services (DSS) and the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) are continuing their investigations, while several of those arrested have already been arraigned in court.

Reports of the alleged coup attempt first emerged in 2025 following the arrest of senior military officers for alleged breaches of military regulations. The government subsequently filed charges against several suspects, alleging treason, terrorism, and terrorism financing.

Musa urged Nigerians to protect democracy and address the country's challenges through democratic means.
