Some journalists covering a rally of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano were attacked by suspected thugs.
The incident occurred on Saturday behind the City Campus of Northwest University, located at Kofar Nassarawa, as the journalists were on their way back to the office after concluding the rally.
Reports indicate that the attackers smashed the rear windshield of a Radio Nigeria vehicle carrying the journalists and damaged other parts of the vehicle.
Daily Trust newspaper reported that a journalist with Pyramid FM Kano, Yakubu Abubakar Gwagwarwa, confirmed the incident, stating that the vehicle was carrying five journalists and three police officers.
He said the attackers were armed with clubs and knives and continued to beat the vehicle despite the presence of security personnel inside.
Gwagwarwa said the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries, while some of the journalists also suffered injuries from shattered glass fragments.
However, he stated that they were not certain whether the attack was directly targeted at the journalists, suggesting that it might have been incidental, as there could have been others who were attacked in the area.
The incident occurred after the APC held a solidarity rally in support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, during which the party received some prominent politicians who defected to its ranks.
This is not the first time suspected thugs have been reported to carry out attacks during political activities in Kano.
In recent months, it was reported that at least three people lost their lives in an attack allegedly carried out by politically affiliated thugs on the day of the swearing-in of the state's new deputy governor.
As of the time of concluding this report, the Kano State Police Command had not issued any statement regarding the attack.
