The Cairo Criminal Court found the defendants guilty of forming an organised criminal group involved in importing materials used to manufacture synthetic drugs for trafficking. They were also convicted of possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Authorities reportedly seized more than 750 kilograms of drugs and raw materials during the investigation and discovered apartments allegedly used as illegal drug laboratories.

Khalifa, 39, is a well-known Egyptian media personality and television presenter. The death sentences can still be challenged through an appeal before Egypt's Court of Cassation.
