A Ukrainian court has ordered the pre-trial detention of two men accused of murdering Anastasiia Berezovska, a Ukrainian woman who was the prime suspect in a bomb attack in Monaco. The suspects will remain in custody without bail while investigators continue the case.
Berezovska was wanted in connection with a June 29 car bomb attack in Monaco that seriously injured Ukrainian-born businessman Vadym Yermolaiev, his partner, and their son. Investigators believe she fled through several European countries before returning to Ukraine, where she was later found shot dead near Kyiv.
Prosecutors said the two suspects include a serving officer of Ukraine’s military intelligence agency (HUR) and a former security officer. One of the men initially admitted involvement in the killing but later withdrew his confession, claiming the other suspect carried out the shooting while he only assisted because he feared for his own safety.
Investigators said they recovered bullet casings from the crime scene and uncovered additional evidence, including a property allegedly used to detain and torture victims. Defence lawyers denied that their clients were responsible for Berezovska’s death and argued that the investigation should continue before any conclusions are reached.
The case has drawn international attention, with authorities in Monaco, Ukraine, and France cooperating to determine whether Berezovska’s murder was connected to the Monaco bombing or whether other individuals were involved in planning or carrying out the attack.
