Condemned Ex-PM Hasina Plans December Return to Bangladesh

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced plans to return to the country in December, despite facing a death sentence issued by a court in her absence. Hasina, who is currently living in exile in India, said she intends to return with senior members of her Awami League party and surrender to authorities.

Hasina said she is prepared to face any consequences after her return, including possible arrest or even death. She said she wants to face trial in Bangladesh and argued that the people of the country should judge her government’s actions.

The former leader fled Bangladesh to India in 2024 after student-led protests ended her nearly two-decade rule. Later, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal sentenced her to death over allegations of crimes against humanity linked to the violent crackdown on the protests. Hasina has denied the accusations and described the case as politically motivated.

Hasina has also criticised the ban on the activities of her Awami League party, saying she is working to reorganise the party through online meetings with its leaders and supporters. Her return could trigger renewed political tensions in Bangladesh, where divisions between rival political groups remain deep.

Officials from the Bangladesh and Indian governments have not provided a detailed response to Hasina’s announcement. India had previously said it was reviewing Bangladesh’s request regarding the possible extradition of the former prime minister.
