Kano State Government Begins Repair of Joda Water Treatment Plant After Seven Years of Dysfunction

The Commissioner of the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment, and Climate Change of Kano State, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, has announced that repair work on the Joda Regional Water Scheme has commenced immediately, following an inspection visit conducted last week.

He stated that the facility had not produced a single liter of water for seven years, making the urgent commencement of repairs a significant development.

According to him, four boreholes have already been rehabilitated and are now operational, filling two reservoir tanks with a combined capacity of 720,000 liters. Additionally, one of the generators powering the facility has been repaired, while the completion of the second generator's repair, along with the restoration of power supply from the main grid, is expected by tomorrow.

The Commissioner added that out of the four main water pumps at the facility, two have been repaired and are functioning, while work continues on the remaining two. He said that once the repairs are completed, the facility—which has a production capacity of 9.6 million liters per day—will begin supplying water to communities along its distribution lines in the coming days.

Dr. Hashim stated that the Kano State Government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, continues to prioritize the revival of drinking water supply in rural areas. He explained that the governor has given directives to drill additional boreholes, along with the comprehensive renovation of administrative offices and other critical infrastructure, to fully restore the Joda facility to operational status.

He noted that these steps demonstrate the government's commitment to improving potable water supply for the people of the state.
