Cameroon is stepping up efforts to ensure that every child is officially registered at birth, as authorities and humanitarian organizations work to reduce the number of children growing up without legal identity documents.
Birth registration provides children with an official identity and is often essential for accessing education, healthcare, social services, and legal protection. Without a birth certificate, many children face difficulties enrolling in school, obtaining official documents, or proving their nationality later in life.
The government, supported by international partners, has expanded awareness campaigns and registration services, particularly in remote and conflict-affected areas where many births have gone unrecorded. Mobile registration teams and community outreach programmes are also being used to reach families with limited access to civil registration offices.
Despite these efforts, challenges such as poverty, displacement, lack of awareness, and limited infrastructure continue to prevent many families from registering their children. Humanitarian groups say improving birth registration is a crucial step toward protecting children's rights and ensuring they have equal opportunities in the future.
Officials say the campaign aims to give every child not only a legal identity but also better access to education, healthcare, and other essential services, helping to secure a brighter future for the country's youngest citizens.
