A nuclear weapon is an extremely dangerous type of weapon that explodes rapidly due to certain chemical substances that disperse and generate atomic energy in the form of smoke or light containing toxic vapor that is harmful to human health, life, and the environment.
It has been confirmed that whenever such a weapon explodes in a place or city, there will be a terrifyingly loud blast followed by toxic smoke, alongside raging fire and highly harmful radiation when it interacts with environmental matter. Scientists have stated that this harmful radiation, once released in an area, continues to affect the community and all living things (humans or animals) throughout the region for years and years. Scientists refer to this harmful substance as "radioactive radiation."
It has been explained that if the yield of this weapon reaches, for example, a million tons, the force of its explosion can cause a minor earthquake at the site of detonation. The main chemical elements used globally in manufacturing this weapon are plutonium and uranium. They are mixed and processed until they reach a certain temperature that alters their original nature into different substances, giving them the ability to explode or combine with one another due to their interaction with or proximity to other light energies or substances.
Due to its severe environmental impact, one ton of nuclear material contained within a weapon or its warhead, when launched, produces an explosive effect and releases a quantity of substances equivalent to the detonation of one billion conventional bombs simultaneously in the same place. If a nuclear weapon with a yield of a thousand tons or more explodes, it can burn and destroy a city or one of the largest regions in today's world. Because of its devastating effects, this weapon is labeled a "weapon of mass destruction."
To date, it has been confirmed that there are at least nine countries that possess this weapon globally. It is estimated that Russia leads the world in the number of nuclear weapons, followed by the United States, then France, then the United Kingdom, then China, then Israel, then India, then Pakistan, and then North Korea.
Experts in weapons science have stated that there are currently two well-known types of nuclear weapons, upon which all other variants are based. The first type contains a powerful atomic energy that disperses upon launch from the weapon carrying it. These rapidly dispersing weapons are arranged together in a single warhead and then launched towards the target.
This method is an older one and is known as the "gun method," as the weapon is fired similarly to how a bullet is fired from a gun. Alternatively, weapons containing plutonium can be arranged in a single warhead, and upon launch, they collide with each other and then explode. This method is known as the "implosion method," and it constitutes the first type of nuclear weapon called the "Atomic Bomb," or "A-Bomb."
This was the type of weapon the United States dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, at the end of World War II, as mentioned above. The second type produces a massive amount of poisonous energy due to the combination of dispersing materials found in the first type, along with other materials that fuse together before dispersing.
This type is manufactured by placing dispersing materials into a single container holding light-vapor energy, and alongside them, arranging energy materials that fuse upon explosion, such as tritium, deuterium, or lithium deuteride—all within one warhead. Once this weapon is deployed at the target, these rapidly dispersing chemicals scatter within the container.
This dispersion generates intense radiation in the form of Gamma rays and X-rays. Instantly, this radiation melts the lithium deuteride, boiling it intensely. After boiling, it produces neutron particles, which interact with uranium energy to cause a massive and powerful explosion. This type is known as the "Hydrogen Bomb," "H-Bomb," "Fusion Bomb," or "Thermonuclear Bomb."
The possession of weapons of mass destruction, or nuclear weapons, has dominated the affairs of major world powers, especially the United States. North Korea and Iran are facing threats from major world powers regarding their ambitions to acquire such weapons.
These weapons were first used during World War II—the bombs the United States dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan, which resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives.
After the US used these weapons, other countries—especially Russia, America's main rival—acquired the technology to develop these terrible weapons. Gradually, other European nations like France, Germany, and the United Kingdom also began their own nuclear programs.
Recognizing that the proliferation of these weapons could lead to catastrophic global wars, US President Eisenhower delivered a speech to the United Nations, proposing the creation of an agency to prohibit nations from possessing toxic weapons. This proposal was accepted.
After more than 80 countries signed the agreement, a body was established to combat the spread of nuclear weapons—the IAEA. The agency, headquartered in Vienna, Austria, officially began its work on July 29, 1957.
After commencing operations, the IAEA continued to encourage various countries that had not signed the treaty to quickly ratify it, leading to a new agreement called the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in 1968.
Countries that signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty
Most countries in the world signed this treaty. Those that did not sign are only three: India, Israel, and Pakistan, all of which have since acquired nuclear weapons. However, North Korea signed the treaty at its inception but withdrew in January 2003.
Pyongyang authorities stated they would not accept inspections they considered unjust, as there were countries secretly possessing these weapons, making it necessary for them to acquire their own for self-defense. This is why tensions regarding North Korea's nuclear program have persisted from that year to the present.
Apart from North Korea, which explicitly withdrew from the treaty, there are other countries that have not withdrawn but are secretly working to acquire nuclear weapons.
One of these is Iran, which is a subject of ongoing international debate regarding this issue. Iran and Israel are in a state of confrontation; Israel did not sign the NPT and therefore possesses nuclear weapons without restriction. Iran has not explicitly declared possessing such weapons but is suspected of using its nuclear energy program as a cover to develop nuclear arms.
Additionally, Libya, under the rule of the late Muammar Gaddafi, secretly attempted to acquire weapons of mass destruction but later abandoned the effort. Similarly, Iraq faced such allegations; indeed, this was one reason the US launched the Iraq War, which toppled Saddam Hussein's regime.
Difference Between Nuclear Energy and Nuclear Weapons
There is a difference between nuclear energy and nuclear weapons. Almost all major industrialized nations possess nuclear power plants, which generate electricity by processing uranium.
We have seen examples of disasters like the one at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan in 2011, and before that, the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in Ukraine in April 1986, which resulted in the deaths of thousands and continues to cause health problems for those exposed to the radiation.
