The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has resigned from his position.
Gusau announced his resignation on Thursday at the headquarters of the Nigeria Football Federation during a press conference.
The NFF and Nigeria’s national teams have faced growing criticism in recent years over their poor performances, including the failure to qualify for major international competitions such as the FIFA World Cup.
Reports indicate that Nigerian authorities are investigating the NFF over the alleged expenditure of ₦17 billion on players’ salaries and other related expenses.
Meanwhile, concerns have also been raised over the payment of match officials in domestic competitions. It was alleged that some referees had not received their payments from Match Week 25 through Match Week 38, among other complaints surrounding the administration of Nigerian football.
The resignation comes amid growing calls for greater accountability and reforms in the management of football in the country.
