Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the ADC party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, stated that restoring the fuel subsidy in Nigeria is not a difficult task. In an interview, he outlined the measures his administration would take to implement this, provided he is elected president in the 2027 election.
Atiku explained that his administration would supply crude oil to Nigerian refineries at a discounted price so that they could sell petrol at affordable rates to the public. He emphasized that strict measures would be taken to ensure the subsidy reaches all citizens without being diverted through other channels.
The presidential candidate said that if he becomes president, restoring the subsidy would not be a major problem because subsidy funds would be allocated in the budget created at the end of every year. Furthermore, every barrel of crude oil produced would be closely monitored and tracked, along with strict oversight of how allocated funds are spent.
He added that the subsidy would not necessarily be permanent; as domestic petrol production increases, the subsidy could be phased out gradually until it is no longer needed, without imposing hardship on the public.
According to Atiku Abubakar, taking these steps will significantly help lower fuel prices, transportation costs, and food prices, while also strengthening industries and generating job opportunities for the nation's citizens.
