Germany is considering whether to reintroduce compulsory military service, but the government has not yet decided to bring it back next year.
The debate has intensified as Germany seeks to strengthen its armed forces in response to growing security concerns in Europe, particularly following Russia's war in Ukraine. Military leaders have warned that the country needs more personnel to meet its defence commitments.
For now, the German government prefers to expand the military through voluntary recruitment. However, officials have indicated that if voluntary enlistment does not produce enough soldiers, compulsory military service could be reintroduced in the future.
Germany suspended mandatory military conscription in 2011, but it was never abolished from the constitution. This means the government can restore it through legislation if it decides it is necessary.
Supporters argue that bringing back conscription would help address troop shortages, improve national preparedness and strengthen Germany's defence capabilities. Critics, however, say it would be costly, difficult to implement and could place an unnecessary burden on young people.
