Iran Lawmakers Present Hormuz Management Bill as US Tensions Escalate

Iranian lawmakers have introduced a new bill aimed at strengthening the country's authority over the Strait of Hormuz, as tensions with the United States continue to escalate.

According to Iranian officials, the proposed legislation seeks to establish a clearer legal framework for managing the strategic waterway, which is one of the world's busiest routes for global oil and gas shipments. Supporters of the bill argue that Iran has the sovereign right to protect its territorial waters and ensure security in the strait.

The move comes amid increasing military and political tensions between Tehran and Washington, with both sides exchanging accusations over regional security and maritime activities in the Gulf.

Iranian lawmakers said the bill is intended to safeguard national interests and respond to what they describe as growing external threats. They also stressed that the legislation does not automatically mean the Strait of Hormuz will be closed but provides legal mechanisms for managing the waterway during times of crisis.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global shipping route through which around one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes. Any disruption to maritime traffic in the strait could significantly affect global energy markets and international trade.

The United States has not officially responded to the proposed legislation, but Washington has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and has pledged to work with its regional allies to ensure the security of international shipping.
