Pope Says AI Must Be ‘Disarmed’ to Prevent Domination, Exclusion, and Death

The Pope has called for strict global regulation of artificial intelligence (AI), saying the technology must be “disarmed” to prevent domination, discrimination, and loss of human life.

Speaking to world leaders and technology experts, the Pope warned that the rapid development of AI without ethical control could pose serious dangers to humanity, especially if it is used in warfare, mass surveillance, or decision-making systems that lack compassion and moral judgment.

He acknowledged that AI has enormous potential to improve education, healthcare, science, and economic development. However, he stressed that without proper ethical guidelines and protections for human rights, the technology could deepen inequality and further marginalize vulnerable communities.

The Pope also expressed particular concern about autonomous weapons powered by AI  systems capable of selecting and attacking targets without direct human involvement. He warned that such technologies could become a grave threat to peace and human dignity.

He urged governments, technology companies, and international organizations to work together to establish laws and safeguards that ensure AI serves humanity rather than becoming a tool of oppression or destruction.

Global debate over the risks and benefits of AI has intensified in recent years as the technology rapidly expands into everyday life, business, security, and military operations.
