A Philippine politician wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) reportedly fled from the country’s Senate building, sparking controversy and renewed attention on the court’s ongoing investigation.
According to reports, security officials attempted to arrest the politician after receiving information linked to an ICC investigation involving alleged human rights violations and killings connected to the country’s anti-drug campaign.
However, before authorities could detain him, the politician allegedly escaped from the Senate premises with the assistance of supporters and members of his security team.
The ICC has been investigating several former and current Philippine officials over thousands of deaths linked to former President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs, which human rights groups claim involved extrajudicial killings.
The Philippine government has repeatedly challenged the ICC’s authority over the country’s internal affairs, especially after the Philippines officially withdrew from the Rome Statute in 2019.
The incident has intensified debate over the government’s response to the ICC investigation, while human rights organizations continue to call for accountability and justice for victims of the anti-drug campaign.
