Pakistan Scrambles to Salvage US–Iran Diplomacy as Ceasefire Faces Collapse

Pakistan is urgently trying to keep diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran alive after a fragile ceasefire between the two countries came under serious strain following failed negotiations.

The talks, which were hosted in Pakistan, were aimed at stabilising tensions after weeks of conflict and securing a more lasting agreement. However, the discussions reportedly ended in deadlock after both sides failed to agree on key issues, particularly Iran’s nuclear programme and security guarantees demanded by Washington.

The negotiations lasted about 21 hours and were described as intense but unsuccessful, with officials from both the U.S. and Iran blaming each other for the breakdown.

Following the collapse of the talks, the ceasefire that had temporarily reduced hostilities is now considered fragile, raising fears that tensions could escalate again if diplomacy fails completely.

Despite the setback, Pakistan has continued to position itself as a mediator, calling for both Washington and Tehran to return to the negotiating table and avoid further escalation. However, reports suggest that the country’s role as a neutral broker is now under scrutiny, with some international observers questioning its ability to manage such a high-stakes diplomatic process.

The situation remains uncertain, as global powers and regional actors watch closely to see whether renewed talks can prevent a return to open confrontation.
