Nigeria's Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, has stated that Nigeria deployed its troops to the Republic of Benin to assist in the fight against terrorism and other serious crimes afflicting the West African region.

He made this remark during the annual army chiefs' conference held in Abuja, where he said the army continues to collaborate with neighboring countries in intelligence sharing and conducting joint security operations.
Shaibu stated that the troop deployment to Benin demonstrates Nigeria's commitment to strengthening regional security and curbing terrorist threats. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support to the military in terms of improving welfare, equipment, and operational capacity.
He added that combat equipment, military accommodations, healthcare, and allowances have been enhanced to boost troops' morale in carrying out their duties.
In December last year, the Senate approved Tinubu's request to deploy Nigerian troops to Benin to help maintain peace and protect democracy following an attempted coup in the country.
