The government of Saudi Arabia has officially appointed Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan al-Fawzan as the new Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, following the passing of Sheikh Abdulaziz Al Sheikh, who had held the position since 1999.
The announcement was made through a royal decree issued by King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, confirming Sheikh al-Fawzan’s elevation to the highest religious position in the country.
Sheikh al-Fawzan, a senior scholar at the Council of Senior Scholars and a member of the Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Ifta, is known for his vast knowledge in Islamic jurisprudence and his strong influence in shaping religious discourse in the Kingdom.
This appointment marks a significant moment for the Saudi religious establishment, as Sheikh al-Fawzan is widely respected across the Islamic world for his conservative stance and deep understanding of Sharia (Islamic law).
Observers say the move aims to ensure continuity in the Kingdom’s religious guidance and preserve its traditional interpretation of Islam under the Wahhabi doctrine.
