The Rivers State Police Command has dismissed three of its officers accused of involvement in the shooting of a Port Harcourt resident, Anthony Obodo, reported to be a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
The State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, disclosed this on Wednesday in Port Harcourt while parading the affected officers.
Adepoju stated that the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, when a police patrol team from the Agip Division was returning from security duty at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium.
According to him, the officers spotted a black Lexus car with tinted windows and attempted to stop it, but the driver refused to pull over, prompting the officers to give chase.
The Commissioner said that during the pursuit, a police officer with the rank of corporal, Alfred Louis, fired a shot that struck the driver.
Obodo was rushed to Palmars Hospital in Port Harcourt for emergency treatment; however, the efforts were unsuccessful as a doctor confirmed him dead.
The Commissioner stated that the members of the team were arrested and detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), where a thorough investigation was conducted.
He added that a manhunt has also been launched for another officer, Inspector Solomon Nwogu, who allegedly fled following the incident.
Adepoju said that upon completing the investigation and establishing the officers' involvement, they were subjected to an internal disciplinary trial, which recommended their dismissal from the police force.
The Commissioner further stated that the officers will be arraigned in court to face appropriate criminal charges under the law.
