Niger Governor Imposes 24-Hour Curfew Following Violent Protests.
The Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Alhaji Umar Bago, has imposed a 24-hour curfew across the state following protests that resulted in the destruction of property.
The protests erupted following the alleged extrajudicial killing of suspected miners. The miners lost their lives while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
In the wake of the incident, the Governor stated that enforcing the curfew became necessary to restore peace and order in the state.
The decision to restrict movement came after protesters damaged government assets, banks, political party offices, and private business properties.
Governor Bago initially confirmed that 37 suspected miners lost their lives while in NSCDC custody.
He added that forensic investigations, medical examinations, and autopsies are currently underway to determine the exact cause of death.
