The Lagos State Government has approved and released the 2026/2027 Harmonised Academic Calendar for public and private primary and secondary schools. The calendar fixes September 14, 2026, as the resumption date for the new session.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, disclosed this in a statement on Thursday.
He noted that the document followed consultations with education stakeholders facilitated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance.
The statement read, “According to the Commissioner, the calendar was finalised after two stakeholders’ meetings where participants reviewed and agreed on key dates for the new academic session.”
According to the approved calendar, the first term will run from Monday, September 14, 2026, to Monday, December 21, 2026, with a mid-term break from November 2 to November 6.
The second term begins on January 11, 2027, and ends on April 9, 2027, while the third term runs from May 3 to July 30, 2027, putting the total number of school days for the session at 182.
The statement read, “Mr. Alli-Balogun said the unified calendar reflects the state government’s commitment to improving the quality of education and ensuring a well-organised academic year. He urged all public and private schools to strictly comply with the approved schedule.”
Alli-Balogun added that International Literacy Day falls on September 8, while International Day of Education is marked on January 24.
The calendar further shows that schools are permitted to pick any two days between Monday, September 7, and Friday, September 11, 2026, for their staff professional development, although the timing is left to each school’s discretion.
It stated that the observance of Open Day is mandatory, even though the timing is at each school’s discretion, while public holidays remain compulsory and subject to changes announced by the federal government.
