The Kano State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf, presided over a mass wedding for 1,500 widows and single women at the Emir’s Palace Mosque in Kano City, under a program organized by the Kano State Government and the Kano Hisbah Board.
The wedding was conducted today, Friday 7/08/2026, at the mosque of His Highness the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. The Governor described the mass wedding program as an act of compassion and support for the community, aimed at restoring hope, strengthening family life, and promoting good morals in society.
Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf stood as the guardian for the first groom, Malam Haruna, whose wife and children were killed in a tragic incident that occurred in Kano. He sought the bride’s hand in marriage from her guardian, His Highness the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, who approved the request in accordance with Islamic teachings.
The Chairman of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, stated that all beneficiaries of the program were screened. He said 200 people were removed after medical tests showed they were unwell, but added that they could be included in the program later if they recover. He also said some women were excluded from the mass wedding after it was discovered that they were pregnant.
The Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, led prayers for guidance, blessings, and peace for the newlyweds. Some of the beneficiaries praised Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for this great contribution to their lives.
Finally, the government sent ₦200,000 to each bride as dowry and capital to start a business. Each bride was also provided with new modern household items.
The coordinator of the program, Malam Ibrahim Daurawa, stated that the Kano State Government set aside about Three Hundred Million Naira (₦300m) to conduct this wedding.
