The Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced his administration's plan to restructure the Kano State Road Traffic Management Agency (KAROTA), with the aim of transforming it into a professional body capable of efficiently managing traffic affairs and ensuring the safety of road users.
The move comes as the governor led a traffic law enforcement exercise at the Kofar Fanfo intersection, where he spent over an hour monitoring how drivers and other road users were complying with traffic light signals.
According to a statement issued by the Director General of Media and Public Relations at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor was accompanied during the patrol by the Secretary to the State Government, commissioners, and other senior government officials.
Governor Yusuf urged private drivers, commercial drivers, tricycle (Adaidaita Sahu) operators, and pedestrians to consistently obey traffic regulations and respect traffic lights, stressing that this is crucial for protecting lives and property.
He explained that his administration would restructure KAROTA and strengthen it to enable the agency to carry out its duties professionally, improve traffic management, ensure the enforcement of road laws, and promote a culture of compliance across the state.
The governor reaffirmed his administration's commitment to providing an efficient, orderly, and safe transportation system for the people of the state.
He also expressed displeasure over the way some road users continue to violate traffic rules and disregard the newly installed traffic lights, stating that such a significant project, on which substantial funds were spent, should not be reduced to a mere spectacle.
Governor Yusuf warned that the relevant authorities should closely monitor traffic offenders and penalize them to ensure that the infrastructure is properly utilized.
