Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has filed a new fundamental rights lawsuit against the ICPC, demanding N10 billion as compensation over allegations that the commission prevented his wife and son from visiting him while he is in detention.
In the suit numbered FHC/ABJ/CS/1852/2026, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on August 13, El-Rufai alleged that the ICPC barred his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and his son, Abba El-Rufai, from visiting him.
El-Rufai, through his lawyer Ubong Akpan, also named the ICPC chairman and the Attorney General of the Federation as second and third respondents in the suit.
El-Rufai put forward nine requests, including asking the court to affirm that his fundamental human rights as provided for by Nigeria's 1999 Constitution remain in effect despite his detention.
He alleged that the continued prevention of his family from seeing him, particularly to deliver food, medication, and other necessities, without any valid legal justification or court order, constitutes a violation of his constitutionally guaranteed rights.
He also alleged that ICPC officials prevented and intimidated his wife and son on July 7, an act he described as an unlawful interference with his marital and family relationships.
El-Rufai is seeking the court to declare that the continued denial of family visits without legal authority contravenes the constitution and amounts to a legally invalid act.
