Abuja Minister Nyesom Wike Orders the Demolition of Any Building Erected on Waterways, Even If It Belongs to a Minister.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike Orders Demolition of Structures Blocking Waterways in Abuja
Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has ordered the immediate demolition of buildings blocking natural drainage channels in Maitama and other flood-prone areas across Abuja.

The Minister issued the directive on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following an inspection tour of flood-affected locations in Maitama.

He stated that the demolition exercise would begin immediately and continue through Saturday, August 22, 2026, targeting any structure obstructing waterways regardless of political affiliation or the status of the property owners.

Wike emphasized that the action is necessary to clear obstructions, allow free flow of water, and mitigate flood risks across the nation's capital.

This decisive measure comes shortly after a recent flooding incident in the Nigerian capital that sparked widespread public debate.
