At least 30 people have been killed after terrorists attacked four mosques in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The Daily Trust newspaper reported that the incident occurred on Friday during the Friday prayer congregation in the towns of Dekara, Kpenya, Sabon-Gida, and Gidan-Zana.
Reports say the terrorists stormed the mosques simultaneously, abducting over 60 worshippers. They later took them into the bush.
Daily Trust reported that the Chairman of Borgu Local Government Area, Mohammed Nasir Abdullahi, confirmed that about 30 of those abducted had been killed.
He said the bodies of the deceased were recovered and buried, while security forces have moved into the area to track the terrorists.
He added that several houses, including that of the District Head of Dekara, Abubakar Umar, were burnt during the attack.
Following the attacks, residents of the affected areas began fleeing to New Bussa and the Republic of Benin due to the terrorists' threat to kill anyone who remains in the areas.
One local resident said only a few people remain in Dekara, as most have abandoned their homes in search of safety.
The Nigeria Police Force said a joint security operation has been launched to arrest the perpetrators and rescue those still in captivity.
Rise in Attacks in Borgu
Residents say the insecurity has affected at least seven of the ten districts in Borgu, forcing hundreds of people, particularly farmers, to flee their homes.
They said the attacks have also destroyed several villages and prevented farmers from accessing their farms.
According to residents, from December 2025 to June 2026, multiple attacks have been carried out on villages in the area, resulting in deaths and forcing thousands more to be displaced.
Residents have called on the federal and Niger State governments to intensify security operations and provide support for those who have lost their homes and livelihoods.
They also appealed for military operations to dismantle the terrorist camps used to plan the attacks.
