Trump Threatens Spain Trade, Demands US Take Over Greenland at NATO Summit

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to suspend trade with Spain and renewed his demand that the United States should take control of Greenland, drawing international attention during the NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye. His remarks have sparked fresh tensions among allies in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Trump criticized Spain, describing it as an unreliable NATO ally because of its position on U.S. policy toward Iran. He said he had instructed the U.S. Treasury Department to begin preparations for trade measures against Spain. In response, the Spanish government dismissed the threat, stating that trade policy is handled by the European Union and reaffirming its commitment to maintaining strong relations with the United States.

The U.S. president also repeated his long-standing claim that Greenland should come under American control rather than remain part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump argued that the Arctic island is strategically important for U.S. and global security because of its location and growing geopolitical significance. However, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen again rejected the proposal, insisting that Greenland is not for sale and that its future should be decided by the people of Greenland.

Trump's comments overshadowed discussions at the NATO summit, where leaders had gathered to strengthen cooperation on collective defense, regional security, and continued support for Ukraine. While the remarks highlighted disagreements among some member states, NATO leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the alliance and to maintaining unity in addressing shared security challenges.
