Mexico’s Sheinbaum Announces Criminal Charges Request in US Over ICE Deaths

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that her government will formally request criminal proceedings in the United States over the deaths of Mexican citizens allegedly linked to operations carried out by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Speaking at a press conference, Sheinbaum said Mexico would pursue legal action through diplomatic and judicial channels to ensure accountability for the deaths. She stressed that the Mexican government has a responsibility to protect its citizens, regardless of where they are, and called for a full investigation into the incidents.

The request follows reports that several Mexican nationals died during or after immigration enforcement operations in the United States. Mexican officials argue that the circumstances surrounding the deaths require independent investigations and possible criminal prosecution if any wrongdoing is established.

Sheinbaum said Mexico is working closely with its embassy and consulates in the United States to provide legal support to the victims' families and to monitor the progress of the investigations.

U.S. authorities have not yet responded in detail to Mexico's request, but ICE has previously stated that it follows established legal procedures during immigration enforcement operations. The case is expected to become another point of discussion in ongoing U.S.-Mexico relations, particularly on issues of migration, border security, and the treatment of migrants.
