The Supreme Court has upheld the death sentence for a person convicted of kidnapping. The Nigerian Supreme Court affirmed the death sentence by hanging passed on a man found guilty of kidnapping in Delta State, Chelynor Halim.
Five justices of the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by the convict and upheld the sentence handed down by the Asaba High Court in 2017.
The court found evidence showing that Halim and his accomplices kidnapped a woman named Joan Osemene in 2014, seized her ATM card and cash, and withdrew ₦55,000 from her account.
After she escaped from her captors, the woman recognized one of her kidnappers when she encountered him again, leading to his arrest and handover to security officials.
In the ruling read by Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme, the Supreme Court stated that the evidence presented confirmed that Halim was among those who committed the crime, and therefore upheld the death sentence by hanging imposed on him.
