THE ASSISTANCE OF THE PRESIDENT OF EGYPT, GAMAL ABDUL NASSER, TO NIGERIA IN THE BIAFRAN WAR

No doubt, the step that President Gamal Abdul Nasser took in sending Egyptian pilots to Nigeria had a great impact in ensuring the success of the federal troops.

Egypt did not bear any of the costs incurred through the federal government's aid at the time. The Nigerian government paid for the equipment it received with large sums of money, most of which were spare parts, some aircraft that the Egyptian Air Force parted with, uniforms, aerial bombs, and other supplies that could be replenished through the Soviet Union.

The payments were made at a time when the Egyptian Ministry of Defence benefited, using the revenue to purchase some of its needed supplies from European markets with large sums of money. These requirements included: continued supplies needed for manufacturing armoured vehicles that Egypt had produced, as well as those it had purchased from Spain.

The Nigerian government paid the salaries of all the pilots and Egyptian experts who participated in this operation. Furthermore, Egypt achieved major successes in signing economic agreements with Nigeria.

The agreement was to rebuild the army and to meet the need of recovering all its territories that Israel had seized during the war. However, Nigeria did not create problems regarding payment. Nigeria's main concern in that war was more focused on obtaining fighter jets, the necessary weapons, and equipment that it received from the Soviet Union.

This is how Egypt's vision was reflected in its policies in Africa. In extreme circumstances, Egypt never stopped aiding Africa.
