President Bola Ahmed Tinubu stated that his administration will continue to take appropriate measures to end the security challenges in Nigeria.

In his Democracy Day speech, the president explained that the government has declared a state of emergency on the security front and approved the recruitment of over 50,000 new police officers as well as thousands of new soldiers.

He said the 2026 budget has allocated 5.41 trillion Naira for security, which is the largest amount ever allocated to this sector in the nation's history.

Tinubu said the Nigerian military has achieved significant success in the fight against terrorism, noting that a major camp of the ISWAP group in the Arege area of Borno State has been destroyed.

According to him, the number of people killed as a result of terrorism has dropped by 81 percent compared to 2015, while over 13,000 terrorists have died within a single year.

However, the president said the government is still giving those willing to surrender an opportunity through the Operation Safe Corridor program, stating that over 124,000 militants and their family members have laid down their weapons since 2023.

He also warned bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terrorism to surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian government.
