Gunfire Erupts in Mogadishu Before Protests Against Somali President’s Rule

Heavy gunfire erupted in Mogadishu ahead of planned protests against the rule of Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire accused government security forces of attacking his residence as opposition figures prepared for demonstrations against the president’s administration.

Witnesses reported hearing intense exchanges of gunfire, including heavy weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, in the Howl Wadaag district of Mogadishu. Local reports said several people were killed and others injured during the clashes.

Political tensions in Somalia have increased after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced an extension of his rule by one year following the expiration of his term in May.

Opposition leaders and some regional officials have rejected the move, accusing the president of attempting to consolidate power and undermine democratic processes.

Former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed also condemned the violence, saying the attacks would not stop planned peaceful protests.

Analysts warn that the growing political crisis could further destabilize Somalia, which is already struggling with insecurity, internal political divisions, and ongoing attacks by the militant group Al-Shabaab.
