German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said that the European Union will begin taking steps toward integrating the Western Balkans into the bloc.
Merz stated that the region is important for maintaining peace, stability, and security in Europe, especially at a time of growing geopolitical and security challenges.
The Western Balkans region includes countries such as Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Albania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Kosovo, many of which have long sought membership in the European Union.
The German leader said the EU wants to strengthen political, economic, and security cooperation with the region while helping candidate countries carry out reforms required for membership.
Analysts say the move comes as the European Union seeks to reduce the influence of Russia and China in the Balkans.
However, several EU member states continue to express concerns over corruption, political instability, and weaknesses in judicial systems within some Western Balkan countries.
Observers say closer integration could boost economic development and reduce regional tensions, although the accession process is expected to take years to complete.
The European Union has been holding membership discussions with Western Balkan states for many years, but progress has often been slow due to political and economic challenges.
