The diplomat, Ambassador Anwarul Karim Chowdhury, secured victory after a tight race against rival candidates, becoming one of the few representatives from South Asia to hold the influential position.

The president of the UN General Assembly oversees debates and major meetings involving all 193 member states and plays an important diplomatic role in shaping discussions on global peace, security, climate change, development, and humanitarian issues.

Bangladesh described the victory as a major diplomatic achievement and a sign of growing international confidence in the country’s role in global affairs.

Diplomats said the election was highly competitive, with several rounds of consultations and lobbying taking place before the final vote.

The new president is expected to focus on issues including global inequality, climate financing, peacebuilding, migration, and support for developing nations during the upcoming UN session.

Officials from several countries congratulated Bangladesh after the result was announced, praising the country’s long involvement in UN peacekeeping and multilateral diplomacy.

The development is also seen as a boost to Bangladesh’s international profile as it seeks a stronger voice in global institutions and decision-making processes.
