The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to embark on an indefinite strike in 11 state universities if the governments of Edo, Delta, Ondo, Adamawa, Borno, Taraba, and Yobe states fail to implement the agreement reached between the federal government and ASUU in 2025 before the end of July.
The union's Benin and Yola zonal leaders made this known at separate press briefings, stating that the governors have failed to pay CATA allowances, other allowances, and arrears of lecturers' entitlements owed since January 2026.
ASUU said its branches in the affected universities have begun preparations to suspend all academic activities, and called on the governors to urgently implement the agreement and pay all outstanding arrears to avoid a strike that could disrupt academic affairs.
