In June 3, 1989, which corresponded to the 28th of Shawwal in the year 1409 AH, Allah took the soul of Imam Khomeini.
Imam Khomeini
The Shah Pahlavi regime arrested him twice and forced him into permanent exile. He lived in Turkey for a period, then moved to the city of Najaf in Iraq. He remained in Najaf for 13 years, teaching, writing, and guiding the revolutionaries in Iran.
In 1979, he was forced to leave Iraq; consequently, he went to the city of Paris in France. After some time, he returned to Iran and led the Islamic Revolution to victory. He remained the leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran until his passing in 1989.
Muslims, particularly Shia Muslims, hold him in high esteem. His funeral was attended by nearly 10 million people, making it the largest funeral gathering in the world to this day.
In addition to his knowledge of jurisprudence and the principles of jurisprudence, which are common subjects in religious seminaries (hawza), he possessed knowledge of philosophy in Islamic thought and mysticism (irfan).
He passed away in the Shahid Raja'i heart hospital in Tehran. His funeral prayer was held on the 1st of Dhu al-Qi'dah 1409 AH, which corresponds to June 5, 1989, at the Grand Musalla (prayer ground) of Tehran.
Ayatullah Sayyid Muhammad Rida Gulpaygani performed his funeral prayer. He was buried in Behesht-e Zahra (a cemetery on the outskirts of Tehran) in the presence of 10 million people who had come on foot from various cities across Iran to observe mourning.
