One Year For The Incident Of Killing a DPO In Rano

The crisis that occurred in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State stemmed from the death of a young motorcycle mechanic after a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) named CSP Baba Ali Muhammad allegedly beat him and used a knife on him over an accusation not severe enough to warrant such action.

On May 25, 2025, residents of Rano town in Kano State killed the DPO of the town’s main police station and set the station on fire.

A statement released by the Kano State Police Command’s spokesperson, S.P. Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, explained that the violence arose from the death of a suspect who had been detained.

He stated that the young man was arrested for reckless motorcycle riding, and that he was allegedly doing so under the influence of drugs.

He said that while in custody, the suspect showed signs of illness and was taken to Rano General Hospital, where he died in the early morning of May 26, 2025, at around 6:00 a.m.

As a result, a group of angry people attacked the Rano police headquarters, set parts of the station on fire, damaged ten vehicles, and burned two others.
