In a statement released by the foreign ministry and carried by state media, Pyongyang said it respects the Iranian people’s right to choose their own leadership, following the decision by Iran’s leadership bodies to select Mojtaba Khamenei to succeed his father.

The announcement came after the reported death of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, which triggered the process of selecting a new leader to guide the country’s political and religious system.

North Korea also criticized the United States and Israel, accusing them of destabilising the region through military actions against Iran.

The statement highlights the continuing political ties between North Korea and Iran, as tensions remain high in the Middle East following recent attacks and escalating conflict.
