After hinting he’d negotiate on healthcare, Trump insists talks come only after reopening government.
President Donald Trump initially appeared open to discussions with Democrats over healthcare subsidies amid the ongoing government shutdown, but later reversed that stance. He posted on social media that Republicans must first reopen the government before any negotiations can start.
His press secretary clarified that Trump has communicated only with Republican leaders since the shutdown began and sees “nothing to negotiate” until funding is restored.
The Senate’s vote on a Republican spending proposal failed once more, as Democrats continue to demand extensions of health subsidies tied to the Affordable Care Act.
