Security operatives in Nigeria have arrested a student, Abubakar Isa Mokwa, of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, for allegedly criticizing the Governor of Niger State, Alhaji Muhammed Umaru Bago, on social media.

According to a report by Daily Trust, the police detained the student after officials reported that he posted comments considered offensive and critical of government policies, which they claimed could “incite public unrest.”

Sources within the university said the student was taken to a police station in Minna for further investigation. Meanwhile, fellow students and civil rights groups have called for his immediate release, insisting that he was only exercising his constitutional right to freedom of expression.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the exact content of his remarks, but legal and human rights experts have urged the police to ensure that students’ right to free speech is protected, especially when such comments are made peacefully and with reasoning.
