The National Assembly of Nigeria has approved the creation of six new states across the country, in what lawmakers describe as a move to strengthen the federal structure and promote regional development.

According to reports, the proposed states will be carved out of existing ones, fulfilling long-standing demands from various regions seeking more representation and autonomy.

A member of the Assembly who participated in the plenary session said: “The creation of new states will help bring government closer to the people and enhance development opportunities across the federation.”

The bill is expected to be forwarded to the President for final approval before implementation begins.

However, some analysts have expressed concern that increasing the number of states could put additional strain on Nigeria’s economy and complicate governance at both federal and state levels.
