Given how expensive ginger is, and how much it is needed, plus it is easy to propagate, everyone should be able to propagate it. If you have a space where you can place a cement sack, especially one that is close to shade, and you have 500 Naira, and you also have a way to get one bucket of water per week, then you too can start propagating ginger. It is very simple. Here is how it works:
- With your 500 Naira, you will get a fresh ginger cutting (or one stick given to you is enough to start). Just make sure the cassava stick hasn't been cut, and it has at least two eyes.
- Get a wide-mouthed water container like a plastic plate, then pour water such that if you immerse the cassava stick and lay it down, the water won't submerge the stick.
- Then place the ginger stick in the water. Just ensure the ginger stick is lying flat in the water, and the water doesn't submerge it, especially the side where the eyes are. Do not let the water submerge the eyes, to avoid rotting.
- Then hide the container with the ginger stick inside in a place that is somewhat dark and cool. It should be moderately ventilated. We don't want too much wind or sun, so the ginger stick doesn't dry out. And a cool, dark place is preferred because it helps the ginger stick sprout more easily.
- You will continue to sprinkle or spray water on the ginger stick about every two days. But be careful not to let the water at its base be too much that it submerges and rots it. If you see water has accumulated, reduce it.
- You will leave your ginger stick in this condition, sprinkling water for it, until about two weeks.
- By about two weeks, your ginger stick will have sprouted right where its eyes are.
- If your ginger stick is small with one or two eyes, you can plant the one that sprouts first. But if it is somewhat large, and has three eyes or more, then leave these sprouts until they grow larger. So that when you come to plant it, you will cut the ginger stick and remove each eye/sprout and plant it separately.
- Then proceed to plant. Get a cement sack and fill it with soil to about one-third of the sack. It is good to get soil with manure. But if it's poultry or other animal manure you are mixing with the soil, do it well before the time you plant the ginger, to avoid worms and the heat of the manure. Then water the soil for about a week before planting your ginger.
- When your ginger is ready to plant, plant it in the sack of soil that you have been watering. Just ensure the sprout is facing upwards and you don't press it down with soil. You can cover the planted cassava sprout, and ensure the plant is not in direct sunlight so the heat doesn't kill the sprout.
- Continue to give the ginger a little water until the sprout grows and appears. You will see it grow a long root. Then continue to give it water gradually.
- After about one to two months, you will see the ginger sprout further with more roots; if you want, you can cut these new shoots and plant them in a different sack.
- You will continue to water at least every other day, for about 3-4 months.
- Gradually, you will see your ginger producing more leaves; this shows you it is growing bigger.
- You will leave the ginger in the soil, watering it (if it doesn't rain) for a period of 3-4 months. Then you will see the leaves darken, then you can harvest your ginger and see the Power of God.
