Female Newborns May Experience Slight Bleeding After Birth

A paediatrician named Ayobola Adebowale, popularly known as Your Baby Doctor, has explained that some female newborns may experience slight bleeding after birth, a condition medically called "pseudo menstruation" or "neonatal menstruation." PUNCH reported that Adebowale disclosed this in a video obtained by a correspondent of the newspaper on Saturday. She said this condition occurs due to a change in hormones after birth and is not an illness.

According to her, "Your baby girl can have a period after birth, and this is what is called 'pseudo menstruation' or 'neonatal menstruation.' It happens because while the baby is in her mother, she is heavily under the influence of her mother's hormones, but when she is born, those hormones drop suddenly, which causes what is called 'withdrawal bleeding,' which is like a period. This happens to female newborns, and it is a normal thing."

The doctor advised parents not to be alarmed if they see such blood or fluid around their baby. She said, "There is no need to panic. It is not a cause for concern. Just observe the bleeding, and after a few days, it will stop on its own. Nothing needs to be done, and this baby is not an evil spirit."

Medical research confirms that some female newborns can experience what is called neonatal menstruation or pseudomenstruation, which occurs within the first week after birth.
