A Lagos Court Sentences Schoolteacher to Life Imprisonment After Finding Him Guilty of Raping an 8-Year-Old Girl

The Lagos State Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a schoolteacher, Nwatu Isaac, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of sexually abusing an eight-year-old female student.

The teacher committed the offense in 2022 at El-Bossaa Nursery and Primary School in Epe, Lagos State.

Justice Rahman Oshodi handed down the sentence on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, and ordered Isaac’s name to be entered into the Lagos State Sex Offenders Register.

The court found Isaac guilty after the prosecution proved the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), the girl testified in court that Isaac, whom she called "Master Isaac," took her to the school restroom and sexually assaulted her.
The court noted that the girl's testimony was convincing and consistent. Furthermore, the testimony of the girl's mother and a medical report from the Mirabel Centre corroborated that the assault occurred.
The court also rejected Isaac's denial and his claim that he was not at the school when the incident occurred.
During sentencing, Justice Oshodi stated that Isaac betrayed the trust placed in him by the victim's parents in his capacity as a teacher.
The court also directed the prosecution to take immediate steps to ensure the protection and support needed by the girl and her family.
Isaac was prosecuted under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015, which prescribes life imprisonment for anyone who defiles a child.
