Nigerien authorities have formally accused France of supporting what they described as an "attempt to destabilize the country on August 28 and 29."
BBC Hausa reported that in a statement, the Nigerien government said the clash that occurred at the 101st Air Force Base in Niamey was linked to "foreign countries," stating that "substantial evidence has been gathered regarding the attack, and consideration is being given to taking the case before international courts."
The statement also claimed that "French President Emmanuel Macron is leading a major network of individuals and groups supporting this operation," while also alleging that some unnamed African countries played a role as intermediaries.
However, so far, the Nigerien government has not presented any evidence to substantiate these allegations.
The 101st Air Force Base, which was attacked on August 29, is part of the Diori Hamani International Airport complex.
It houses Nigerien military aircraft and drones, along with an anti-terrorism force from the Sahel alliance.
Reuters news agency reported that Russian and Italian troops also have facilities there.
Niger has stated that, in addition to Russia, it also received assistance from Algeria.
Russia has confirmed that its forces helped thwart what was described as an attempted coup in Niger on Saturday.
