Kano Government to Ban Daytime Heavy-Duty Truck Movement in Metropolis
The Kano State Government has announced plans to restrict the entry of heavy-duty trucks into the Kano metropolis between 6:00 AM and 6:00 PM to reduce traffic congestion and improve vehicular movement.
The State Commissioner for Transportation, Hon. Haruna Isa Dederi, disclosed this during a press briefing, stating that arrangements have been finalized to enforce the new regulation.
The commissioner noted that the decision became necessary due to the state's growing population and Kano's status as a major commercial hub in the region.
Dederi explained that the initiative is part of a public-private partnership between the state government and a private firm aimed at modernizing traffic management and enhancing transportation services.
According to him, six entry routes into the city will fall under the new system:
1. Kano to Katsina
2. Kano to Zaria
3. Kano to Danbatta
4. Kano to Gwarzo
5. Kano to Wudil
6. Kano to Hadejia
He added that restricting heavy truck entry during the day will ease traffic at major entry corridors, facilitating smoother movement for commuters and business operations.
Similarly, the Managing Director of the partner firm, Kafilu Abdulkadir, stated that a similar framework adopted in Lagos State in 2007 successfully reduced traffic congestion by establishing designated truck parks.
Abdulkadir revealed that a major truck park will be constructed at Daka Tsalle, noting that over 3,000 heavy-duty trucks enter Kano daily. He added that the truck terminal is part of broader measures to curb gridlock on the main routes leading into the city.
