Bandits known as the Lakurawa have launched an attack that resulted in the deaths of over 32 people in Ungushi town, located in the Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Reports indicate that the bandits also set fire to three vehicles, two shops, and seven houses, though rain helped prevent the fire from causing widespread destruction.
According to reports, local residents and security operatives killed 13 of the gunmen during a prolonged gun battle between the two sides.
The incident occurred on Friday while community members were inside the central mosque. The Lakurawa arrived around 2:15 pm on an unquantifiable number of motorcycles.
Immediately after the prayers concluded, they killed 5 people on the spot. After leaving, they returned and killed two more people on a hill, after which they began shooting indiscriminately. An eyewitness reported hearing the bandits instructing each other to kill any male they came across, while sparing women and young children. The attack resulted in the loss of 32 lives, while other residents scattered in search of their relatives.
Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto arrived in Kebbe Local Government Area on Sunday evening to express condolences and reinforce efforts to end terrorism in the region.
