On Friday, July 10, 1981, Dr. Bala Muhammad (husband of Hajiya Naja'atu Muhammad), aged 45, was killed in a political riot.
On this very day, July 10, 1981, Dr. Bala Muhammad, who served as a political adviser to the Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abubakar Rimi, was killed.
The conflict between the late Emir Ado Bayero and the late Governor of Kano, Abubakar Rimi, led to the assassination of Dr. Bala Mohammed—a young lecturer, a patriot, a visionary, and a man full of hope and ambition to build a just and equitable society.
He passed away at the age of 35, and up until his death, he had served as the political adviser to the late Governor Abubakar Rimi of Kano State for nine months.
He was assassinated with fire. While he was working in his house on Sultan Road, the godless attackers set him and the contents of the house ablaze.
The late Abubakar Rimi shed more light on the reason for Dr. Bala's killing. He said: "The events of Friday, July 10, are unfortunate, and we are deeply saddened.
But these are occurrences that should be expected in any struggle between progressive forces and those who seek to turn the clock backwards in this country and everywhere else."
During the riot of July 10, 1981, the Kano State House of Assembly—then known as Hasiya Bayero, located by the south gate—was set on fire, along with the Kano radio station, the houses of state legislators in the Gwammaja area, the Triumph newspaper building owned by the Kano State government, and many other places.
