German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has praised the growing cooperation between Germany and France on nuclear deterrence, describing it as an important step toward strengthening Europe's collective security.
Speaking after high-level discussions with French leaders, Merz said closer coordination on defence and nuclear strategy would enhance Europe's ability to respond to emerging security threats, particularly amid ongoing tensions with Russia.
France, the European Union's only nuclear-armed member state, has long maintained an independent nuclear deterrent. While Germany does not possess nuclear weapons, it has increasingly emphasized the importance of working closely with France and other NATO allies to reinforce European defence capabilities.
Merz noted that stronger defence cooperation between Berlin and Paris would complement NATO's security framework rather than replace it. He stressed that Europe must become more capable of defending itself while maintaining its transatlantic partnership with the United States.
French officials also welcomed the closer strategic partnership, saying greater defence integration among European nations is essential in the face of evolving geopolitical challenges.
The renewed focus on nuclear deterrence cooperation comes as European governments continue to increase defence spending and strengthen military coordination in response to the changing security environment across the continent.
