WhatsApp to Let Users Go by Usernames Instead of Phone Numbers

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow users to connect using unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers, a move aimed at improving privacy and security.

Under the planned system, users will be able to create a unique username that others can use to find and contact them without needing their mobile number.

The feature is expected to offer greater privacy, especially when messaging new contacts, joining group chats, or interacting with people whose phone numbers users may not want to share.

Reports indicate that phone numbers will still be linked to user accounts behind the scenes for account registration and security, but they may no longer need to be visible during conversations initiated through usernames.

The feature is currently under development and has not yet been officially released to all users. Meta Platforms is expected to announce more details, including the rollout timeline, in a future update.
