LONDON — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as both leader of the country and head of the Labour Party, bowing to mounting pressure from within his own ranks.
In a televised address, Starmer revealed that he had already formally notified King Charles III of his decision to step down.Reflecting on his tenure, Starmer noted that when he initially took the helm, the Labour Party was severely weakened both politically and economically. Despite these deep-seated challenges, he emphasized that he had worked tirelessly to reshape the party's trajectory. He highlighted his efforts in tackling systemic issues, including rooting out institutional antisemitism, while restoring public trust in crucial areas such as national security and economic stability.
However, Starmer acknowledged that the party is now questioning whether he remains the right figure to lead them into the upcoming general election.
To ensure stability, Starmer stated that he will remain in office as Prime Minister in a caretaker capacity until a new Labour leader is elected, which is expected to conclude before Parliament returns from its summer recess.
Concluding his address, Starmer promised to facilitate a smooth and orderly transition of power, pledging his full support to his eventual successor. He also extended his gratitude to his parliamentary colleagues and civil servants for their dedication and public service.
